How to Choose the Right School for Your Child
A practical five-step guide to understanding Charlotte school options, setting family priorities, comparing schools, and choosing with confidence.
When the time comes to choose the right school for your child, many parents feel a mix of excitement and overwhelm. You may remember what you liked and didn't like about school growing up, but you quickly see that the landscape has changed: charter schools, magnet programs, and a whole new vocabulary needed to understand your options (Montessori, International Baccalaureate, early college).

1. Learn How the System Works
Before researching individual schools, get clear on:
- Enrollment and school choice deadlines
- Which school your address is zoned for
- How the magnet program works
- Which charter schools are available and how to apply
- Open houses and school choice events in your district
Then learn what to ignore. Popular ratings, including North Carolina's School Performance Grades, lean heavily on achievement scores, which don't tell you what most parents think they do. Similarly, popular opinions about whether a school is "good" or "bad" can have little relationship to how effective a school actually is or to kids' day-to-day experience there. It's as important to know what info to tune out, as it is to know what to tune in.

2. Prioritize What Matters Most to Your Family
Skip the "Top 10 Best Schools" lists. Instead, start with what matters most to your family. Jot down two lists:
- Must-haves: dealbreakers like bus service, aftercare, strong academics, or specific supports (special education, English learning, advanced learning)
- Nice-to-haves: bonuses like a specific magnet program or school size

3. Explore All of Your Options
Did you know Mecklenburg County addresses have 100+ public school options for K-12? Most families often only consider the handful they've heard of. Start with your complete list, then narrow to 10 or fewer using your priorities and reliable effectiveness data.
As you review schools, pay attention to student growth data instead of ratings: it shows how much students actually learn in a year. RYSE shows it as an average for all students and for specific groups like students with special needs, English Learners, and racial/ethnic identity groups, so you can answer questions like "Which schools are most effective at supporting students with special needs?" or "How well has this school supported advanced learners?" 4. Compare Your Favorites
After you've narrowed your options to a short list, it's time to learn more about each one. Start with each school's website for programs and logistics, then look for social media or parent groups (PTA/PTO) for a more meaningful window into the school's culture, values, and day-to-day experience.

5. Connect and Choose
Now engage with the school community directly: websites and numbers can only tell you so much about the people who'll support your child. Visit if you can.
When you tour, you'll likely hear about the school's programming and vision. That's useful, but you also want a read on its effectiveness. Some schools have inspiring visions they don't quite implement. Asking about the school's student growth results can be a good way to understand its effectiveness beyond the glossy brochure.
- Strong growth? Ask what they do to support students so effectively.
- Weak growth? Ask what's driving it and what they're doing about it.
- Differences in growth between student groups? Ask why there are these differences in growth and how they're addressing them.
Talk to families and staff who've actually been part of the school. Push past "We love it!" Ask what specifically made it a good fit, and what challenges they've seen.
If you're interested in schools other than your zoned school, you'll want to determine which is your first choice, second choice and so on. This will inform how you rank your school options in the CMS magnet lottery.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the most important factor in choosing a school?
- There's no universal answer, which is why the process starts with your priorities. But we recommend that families who want an effective school overall look at student growth results, because it's usually hard for a school to help all kids grow unless they have excellent teachers, a strong school leader, a good school culture, and the know-how to use their resources well.
How early should I start?
- About a year ahead is probably ideal as that gives you time to think about your priorities and explore your options at a leisurely pace. However, as long as you begin before the future registration deadline in Charlotte (each fall), you still have time to consider your options and find a great fit.
Do I need to already live in Charlotte to start?
- No. Steps one through four work the same before you've moved, using the neighborhoods or addresses you're considering. Many relocating families narrow their list before making an offer on a house. You'll need a local address to enroll your child, which must happen each fall to participate in the magnet lottery.
